Cheapest Ammo 2022 - It's no secret that the ammunition market has been volatile (to say the least) since the Covid pandemic took hold, but some calibers seem to be easing while others are on the rise. Redditor Chainwaxologist owns FoundryOutdoors.com, a web-based hunting and fishing retail store, so to keep his ammo costs and supplies competitive, he decided to track ammo cost trends for the most popular calibers. Chainwaxologist used their findings to create a simple graph to show trends in a friendly one-stop format to help us visualize the data. A chainwaxologist's observations can be read below.
I'm back with more ammo price data. I have an online hunting retail business (FoundryOutdoors.com) so I post ammo price numbers on Ammoseek every few days because ammo is a big part of our business. Needless to say it was a painful year for our ammunition sales with limited inventory available. Since the previous update in June 2021, we've seen a big across-the-board drop in prices per round from June to August, only to return to higher levels in early September, likely due to increased hunting season demand. Several calibers saw 25%+ CPR price increases in August alone, notably the 308 Win and 7.62x39mm. Other calibers such as the 380 Auto, 9mm and 22LR saw more muted increases, possibly due to the fact that manufacturers prioritized production of these calibers during the pandemic, which led to increased supply; The fact that these calibers are not commonly used for hunting likely helps keep demand levels steady. Between the start of September and now, we have seen price declines of 5-20% across the board, which means that in most cases the CPR is still higher than the 5-10% lower prices seen in July/August. I have also spoken with some of the largest national ammo distributors who, unfortunately, agree on the expectation of limited ammo inventory and elevated prices in 2022. Now trending downwards once again.
