Remington Firearms will relocate its global headquarters and open a new manufacturing and research and development center in LaGrange, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Monday.

Over a five-year period, officials estimate the company will invest $100 million and create 856 jobs in Georgia.

"Georgia's firearms industry is responsible for thousands of jobs and millions of dollars in investment in our communities," said Governor Kemp. "I'm the proud owner of some of Remington's top quality products, and I'm excited to welcome them to their new home in the Beach State. I look forward to seeing the oldest firearms manufacturer in the U.S. thrive in Georgia's pro-business environment as another great manufacturing success for our state."

Founded in 1816 and one of the world's largest manufacturers of firearms and firearms, the move will include more production in Georgia.

The gunmaker, which started in Herkimer County in 1816, will invest $100 million in LaGrange, Georgia and hire 856 people over five years, the company and Georgia officials announced.

"The decision to locate in Georgia was simple, the state of Georgia is not only a business-friendly state, it's a gun-friendly state," said CEO Ken D'Arcy.

"The Remington 'gun' assets of the Remington Outdoors Company were acquired through the bankruptcy of the Roundhill Group," he explained.

"At the time of this acquisition, the weapons group's headquarters, research and development group and some manufacturing were located in Huntsville, Alabama. To be clear, none of this was located outside of Alabama."

"We are very pleased with the work done and we are confident that we will be able to ramp up production at Ilion as demand dictates," said D'Arcy, adding that the company is looking to hire more staff.

Herkimer County Executive Jim Wallace said it is his understanding that RemArms will continue to make firearms in Ilion and will be able to add more employees.

The Herkimer County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) has not had direct contact with the RemArms owners in recent months, although the agency has contacted them, said board chairman Vincent J. Bono said. Had the Ilion plant been slated to close, it would have had a devastating impact on the village of Ilion, Herkimer County and the region, he said.

In a statement, US Rep. Claudia Denny, R-New Hartford, said, "Remington Arms has been a staple of the Mohawk Valley since 1816 and has provided good manufacturing jobs for generations of New York families." Denny said he remains in touch with local stakeholders and will "do everything I can on behalf of Remington employees and the Herkimer County community." As the gun control debate grips the nation, the Remington Arms Factory in a small upstate NY town is trying to do what it's always done - make guns.

Roundhill Group Purchases Remington Arms' Ilion Plant

The nation's oldest gun maker, founded in Herkimer County in 1816, will invest $100 million in operations in LaGrange, Georgia, southwest of Atlanta, and hire 856 people over five years, the company and Georgia officials announced Monday.

"At Ilion, we're trying to increase production and hire more employees," said Ken D'Arcy, CEO of Roundhill Group, owner of RemArms. "The entire management has spent a lot of time at Ilion, and we are very pleased with the work being done, and we are confident that we will be able to increase production at Ilion as needed."

He added, "The decision to locate in Georgia was very simple, the state of Georgia is not only a business-friendly state, it's a gun-friendly state."

Herkimer County Administrator James Wallace said it is his understanding that the announcement will not affect the RemArms Ilion facility.

Gun Manufacturer To Move Headquarters From New York To Georgia

"They're up to 350 workers now, and they're looking to add more," said Herkimer County Executive James Wallace, adding that Huntsville operations, research and development and corporate headquarters will likely be consolidated in New Georgia. .

"They're telling us it's not going to affect employment in Ilion," said Bill Smith, a spokesman for the United Mine Workers of America, adding that the union will see what happens and is currently taking the company at its word.

Smith said it's in the company's best interest to keep the 216 skilled workers in Ilion on the payroll. He added that the union and Remington are working on a new contract through collective bargaining, which Smith said is currently underway.

"Our calls to the county, through the IDA, to the company multiple times over the past few months have gone unanswered."

Right now, he and other officials want to hear directly from company officials about what will happen to the Ilion plant and its workers.

"I know they're not happy with the regulations in New York state, but it doesn't affect production. Everyone's making business decisions," said Herkimer County IDA Executive Director John Bisek.

Pisek said there has been a lot of growth in Herkimer County recently. "We're happy to help anyone who wants to come here and grow."

Gun Maker Remington Moving To Georgia From N.y. In $100 Million Deal

Its workforce at its sprawling factory in Ilion has been increasingly disrupted in recent years by a combination of layoffs, long layoffs and dissatisfaction with New York's gun control measures.

"We are very excited to be coming to Georgia, which not only welcomes business, but also enthusiastically supports and welcomes companies in the firearms industry," RemArms CEO Ken D'Arcy said in a statement through Georgia Governor Brian Kemp's office.

The company owns parts of the former Remington Outdoor Co., which makes rifles, shotguns and some handguns, after the former parent auctioned off its assets piecemeal during bankruptcy proceedings in Alabama last year.

Investors doing business as Roundhill Group bought the Remington brand firearms business, which did business in Ilion, New York and Lenoir City, Tennessee, for $13 million.

It grew into a gun franchise, but faced declining sales, quality complaints and legal pressures related to the Sandy Hook school massacre. The current company no longer makes the Bushmaster AR-15 rifles used in the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting in Connecticut to kill 20 first-graders and six teachers.

Arms manufacturers left their traditional home in the Northeast, as people there became more hostile to guns, and moved to more politically amenable settings in the South and West.

Kemp famously took a shot at another man in a campaign ad in 2018 when the Republican was seeking his current office.

Remington Arms Moving Headquarters To Georgia

Scott Malone, economic development director for the city of LaGrange, said the city of Remington already has at least one building preserved and will work on a mix of new and renovated facilities. He said local governments would provide property tax reductions and utility and infrastructure improvements.

The new owners recently restarted operations there and brought back more than 200 laid-off workers. New York's local government offered 10 years of tax incentives in exchange for the restart and upgrades.
