Cdx 50 Tremor - The Cadex CDX-50 Tremor .50 BMG is designed to deliver a large payload with extreme accuracy. The newest addition to the Tremor line is a compact 20-incher designed specifically for military and law enforcement applications. Made with Canadian and American components, the Tremor series promises extreme range dominance. Eager to see how this rifle would perform in civilian hands, Cadex sent a new 20-inch Tremor for testing.
Tremor offers a foldable material with all the adjustments you could want. This includes an adjustable butt pad, pull length and cheek rest. All of these adjustments are completely tool-free and incredibly simple. The bottom of the stock has a removable Picatinny rail that can be swapped for a pocket rider.

The trigger is Cadex's DX2 Evo selectable single/double stage trigger. This allows the shooter to convert the factory trigger pressure from two stage to one stage depending on the shooter's preference. Trigger weight can be quickly adjusted from 1.5 to 2.5 pounds with the included Allen wrench. The bottom of the receiver can also be removed using the Allen keys provided. This allows easy access to the full trigger assembly for a full range of adjustments.

The front of the magazine and magazine release is a two-bolt attachment point to the receiver. This allows you to attach a bipod rail, ARCA tripod adapter or RC2 tripod adapter. This receiver mounting point is a great design feature and allows for a wide range of traverse and elevation adjustments.
The CDX-50 Tremor comes with a five-wheel single deck steel loader. The magazine construction with locking lugs on the front and rear is incredibly durable and very easy to load and seat. This two-tab design allows the magnet to be inserted directly into the receiver. There are two clicks to let you know the magazine is fully installed.
Underneath the custom-built Mirage control tube is a 1:15 revolver Barthlein match barrel. This design helps dissipate the latent heat of the barrel from the optic, reducing mirage and image distortion when the barrel heats up.
At the end of the Tremor's 20.6-inch barrel is a Cadex MX1 muzzle brake. Made from 416 stainless steel, this three-chamber design aims to reduce recoil without raising excessive dust during firing.

The Tremor 50 uses a safety mechanism mounted directly on the bolt assembly. When the safety is engaged, the bolt is locked in this position and cannot be rotated.
The safety has a strong enough connection, but it pops out of the safety easily when you're ready to fire. This is another design that I like, but it takes some getting used to.
Tremor's threaded bolt is the most prominent feature when handling the gun. This is the smoothest bolt throw I have ever experienced in a bolt action rifle. Although the bolt weighs only 2.26 pounds, the bolt is easy to open and actuate.
Bolt removal is simple and efficient for disassembly and service. When the stock is folded 90 degrees, press the bolt release button and pull the bolt back to remove it from the receiver.

The Tremor's folding stock is opened by pulling back the latch, and the stock is gently pushed to the left of the receiver. Two white polyurethane spacers on the top and bottom of the hinge assembly prevent any movement. This gives the kit a very smooth soft close feel when the material is attached to the back.
The stock has a very audible click when open or closed. During my review, I was struck by the elegance of this hinge mechanism.
When the material is folded, this 20-inch CDX Tremor measures just 37 inches in total length. This makes it perfect for carrying and storing in smaller and smaller spaces.
Cadex sent both their factory soft case and custom hard cases to look at the Tremor.

Their factory hard case was this Nanuk 990, which I was impressed with. The box has an open hinged lock flap with a spare magazine well and integrated locking latches (along with four additional external locking points). This was a great way to safely transport the tremor while browsing.
.50 BMG is nothing new when it comes to calibers, but its popularity is well deserved. Entering service in 1921, the .50 BMG has now been in military service for a hundred years and remains one of the most productive cartridges used by the military today.
This expanded .30-06 Springfield cartridge is available to the civilian community with many shell options. Everything from match grade Hornady A-MAX to regular ball ammo to piercing fuzes. If you want the largest variety of shell types, the .50 BMG is the way to go. Ball ammo (pictured left) cost me $2.65 each in 2020 and was cheaper than the .300 Win Mag ammo at my local sporting goods store.
I wanted to take this rifle to the range a few times before grouping it for accuracy. This will allow me to get used to the recoil behind the rifle and put a nice copper mess in the bore.

As I prepared to make the recoil much stronger, I found that the recoil was incredibly manageable. As pictured, the rifle weighs just 26.6 pounds (very light for a 50 BMG bolt action), and the MX1 muzzle brake does an excellent job of easing recoil. All without a huge dust cloud and very little explosion.
With a short bolt throw, smooth bolt, and very controllable recoil, it's very easy to run rounds fast. After several trips to the range and over a hundred rounds, it was time to see the accuracy of this Tremor 50 on paper.
With a ballistic coefficient of 1.050 G1 (or 1.1 G7) and extreme durability, the Hornady 750 grain A-MAX is the gold standard in .50 BMG shells.
Hornady sponsored this review and sent factory A-MAX ammunition. Additionally, with the help of .50 BMG enthusiast Mike Pappas, a custom load was developed for this rifle.

With a group of 5 factory rounds on paper, I started working on each batch of loads. Measured in each case to eliminate any possible variables, this allows me to find the sweet spot for a 20.6 inch barrel.
If you've never shot a short .50 BMG in a tunnel, it's not something I recommend doing very often. Apparently I "rocked the break room" at TNT Guns and Range, which was on the floor above me when I was shooting.
The end result? The Hornady A-MAX averaged .76 MOA groups with factory-loaded ammo and hand-loaded A-MAX groups only .68 MOA. Considering all the microcontusions I probably gave myself during testing.
In the following weeks, a skilled .50 BMG shooter was able to place a 3-round group (above right) that measured just .52 MOA at 100 yards, this time using only 660 gram ammo.

While the 20-inch version of the CDX-50 is not optimized for extended ranges, I decided to push the rifle a little further to see what it could do.
An undiscovered location in Wyoming will be the perfect testing ground for this long-range rifle. Using Hornady's 4DOF ballistic calculator, I zeroed an 8-inch steel plate at 800 yards.
With a reduced target size of only 1 MOA, there is no room for error. So, after having to lean a bit because of the crosswind, I was able to connect with the plate to devastating effect. The 750-grain A-MAX left the barrel with 10,633 foot-pounds of energy at 2,527 fps and hit the steel at 1,842 fps with 5,650 foot-pounds of energy. Bad target chains holding steel never stood a chance.
Feeling amused and apologetic (these weren't my steel targets), I decided to destroy a few blocks after 1000m with the remaining ammo (instead of pulling more steel from the chains). Needless to say, I couldn't be more impressed with the accuracy and repeatability of this unit, especially in this short barrel configuration.

Everything from the chassis to the magazine on this CDX-50 was great. The bolt feels like it's riding glass, even when it's dirty, and Bartlein consistently collects the barrel and whatever ammo you put inside it. I came away empty handed looking for things I didn't like about this rifle. Almost empty-handed.
Since the safety can only be engaged with the bolt closed, the wheel cannot be removed while the safety is engaged. This design is certainly not foolproof, but forcing the safety off and chambering the .50 BMG takes some getting used to.
As you can imagine, the Cadex CDX-50 Tremor doesn't come cheap, with a price tag of $8,069.95. The rifle configured in the photos above will set you back about $12,000. Base price though
